The Guianese Shield hub covers the Eastern Region of Venezuela, the northern arch of Brazil, and the whole of the territory of Guyana and Suriname (French Guyana, to the east, is not participating in IIRSA). It has a total estimated area of 2.7 million km2, with a population of 21 million. A relatively low population density of 5.07 inhabitants per km2 reflects differences in the relative development of the hub’s various areas. In fact, IIRSA documents distinguish between 2 sub-regions in the hub, one with value-added production and a high population density (consisting mainly of eastern Venezuela), and the other, with abundant natural resources—up to now only “slightly exploited”—and a low population density (in all of Guyana, Suriname, and the states of the Brazilian northern arch). IIRSA aims to level out these differences by facilitating investments in such activities as tourism and recreation. Its backers also find potential in the production of non-GMO soybean and its protein chain, and in the development of poultry and fish farming.

The Guianese Shield hub currently contains 34 IIRSA projects, divided into 4 project clusters. At the time of IIRSA’s creation, aggregate project costs were available for only 2 of the 4 clusters, yet the total investment for the hub has been estimated at $366 million. The project clusters consist mainly of road transport, port construction, energy, and telecommunications projects.
