Amazon jungle could be lost in 40 years, says campaigners

A new report by Conservation International warns that development plans funded by the multinational government-backed Initiative for the Integration of the Regional Infrastructure of South America (IIRSA) could have severe environmental consequences for the Amazon, potentially resulting in the complete destruction of the rainforest in 40 years.  

The report found that IIRSA has failed to analyze the collective impact that the projects, which include transport, power generation and communications initiatives, will have on the region. Increased deforestation and disruption to the region’s ecosystems are among the potential consequences of the projects that will open up new areas of the rainforest that were previously inaccessible.
