Summary by BIC
The National Report for Human Rights and the Environment of the Brazilian platform for economic, social, cultural and environmental human rights (DhESCA Brasil) is investigating possible human rights violations in the state of Rodonia from the dam implementation project in the Madeira River, also known as the Madeira Complex.
The Madeira Complex is a large gamble for the federal government which seeks to resolve its energy demand problem over the next years. The total cost is estimated at over 21 billion Reals.
The impact studies in the licensing of the Madeira dams face large resistance from Bolivian and Brazilian Movements that denounce the social and environmental costs of the project. The project will displace thousands of communities that live on the shores of the river and will compromise the water quality and food chain of the fish.
The mission will be in collaboration with the Popular Independent Forum and the Brazilian Network. It will consist of visits with indigenous communities, meetings with popular organizations and movements and meetings with public authorities.
