Projects in the Spotlight

The Southern hub cuts across Argentina and Chile at the level of the Argentine ports of Bahía Blanca (South of Buenos Aires Province) and San Antonio Este (Río Negro Province) and the Chilean ports of Concepción (in the Bío Bío region) and Puerto Montt (in the Los Lagos region). It has a total area of around 490,000 km2, which makes it the smallest geographically of all the IIRSA Hubs. It has almost 6.1 million inhabitants.

For IIRSA, this hub’s development potential is found in bilateral trade using existing land routes and the 2 main border crossings. Economic activity has increased markedly in the last 5 years, especially in the Argentina-Chile direction in the trade of fuel, construction inputs, and forestry products. Opportunities for continued growth are found in services and trade generally because of the high concentration of tourism, transport, logistics, and commerce in the hub.

The Southern hub currently contains 21 IIRSA projects, divided into 2 project clusters. At the time of IIRSA’s creation, the total estimated cost of the projects in the hub was $1.1 billion. The project clusters consist of a large number of road transport, energy, and border crossing facilitation projects.
